New Year's Resolution

One of my New Year's Resolutions is to blog more . . . I don't understand how fast a year goes by! But, here I am, ready for a new year and a new start and lots of new adventures!

My word for 2010 is "BELIEVE": to think that something exists or is a reality; to be confident that someone or something is worthwhile or effective; to think that something is right or good; to accept something as true or real. So each month, I am going to share one thing that I most believe in, and in December I will have a list of twelve wonderful things!

January: I BELIEVE in ME! I am a child of God who is a wonderful, caring, creative, happy, and strong woman. I have a strong belief that I am of worth and value and placed on this earth to do incredible things. Each day brings a new adventure and challenges. I will work hard, learn new things, and make good use of the 24 hours I am given. I will make ME a better ME!

Can't wait for this weekend . . . we are headed to CHA to touch, see, and smell all of the latest and greatest in scrapbook and crafting supplies. But, best of all, Michelle will be releasing her first scrapbook paper line . . . "My Favorite Pieces". The rub-on embellishment that goes with the paper is a joint effort of both Michelle and Jen. This line is dedicated to my three grandsons and one other special little boy who have been diagnosed on the autism spectrum. A portion of the proceeds from this paper line will be donated to autism research. I am so proud of my girls!

The layout samples are from Michelle and give you a glimpse of the wonderful diversity of this new line. Hope to see some of you in Anaheim. Stop by the "The Paper Element/Color Coordinations" booth to see the paper and give Michelle your congratulations.

Sister's Weekend in October

Yes, it is actually twelve months since the last time I posted on my blog -- how do you put an entire year into a couple of paragraphs? I think the most significant thing I have relearned is to remember who I am, why I have been placed on the earth at this particular time, and that I am not alone.

I am very proud of my children. They have all had their own series of challenges and triumphs this past year. Some are still working their way through them and others are beginning to see the fruits of their labors. What has been most amazing to me is to feel and see the love and concern they have for each other. Life is hard and there are no guarantees as to what waits for us each morning. A dear friend helped me to realize that every day is a good day when you are still alive and given the opportunity to face a new set of adventures. I hope I am learning how to make the most of them!

Devine Memories, our scrapbook store, continues to bless and influence our lives. We had some very special experiences this past month with family and friends and are excited and determined to forge ahead. A lot of faith and pray plays into the success of our dreams.

Faith, hope and charity . . . three great words with lots of promise. I have experienced all three this past year and want to thank all those who have touched my life and brought me so much joy and gladness. I am truly blessed and can honestly say that Life is Great in Mesa, Arizona!

Amazing Weekend!

We had an incredible time at the "Walk Now for Autism" fundraiser. It was amazing and very emotional all at the same time. All three of my autistic grandsons were at the walk . . . Jake, Jaden, and McKay and they were troopers as we completed the three mile course. It was a very long three miles, but we all finished the walk . . . what a wonderful feeling!

Our scrapbook store, Devine Memories, was a corporate sponsor. Over the past several months we have raised $7,264.00 to help with awareness and research for this physical disorder. Autism is our charity of choice and we encourage all families to celebrate in their children's lives. We had a display table of different scrapbooking ideas to help document and preserve their accomplishments and memories.

Thanks so much to everyone who helped make this event a success . . . our customers, our families, our friends, and most of all Jake, Jaden, and McKay! WE LOVE YOU!

Walking for Autism . . .

This Sunday, my family and I will participate in the "Walk Now for Autism" fundraiser at Tempe Town Lake in Tempe, Arizona. I have three beautiful grandsons who have been diagnosed with some type of autistic spectrum. They are the sweetest, most lovable, and incredible boys and we are so lucky to have them in our family. Our scrapbook store, Devine Memories, has chosen autism research as our charity of choice. Over the past several weeks we have held several fundraising activities for this cause. We want to thank all of our customers and friends who have so willingly given their time, money and talents to help us in this effort.

We also have some incredibly awesome t-shirts on sale at the store of which the profits go directly to autism research. Jake's handwriting expresses everything, and Jen's graphics add extra charm. Chili Contest . . .

We had a neighborhood chili cookoff tonight at the park . . . lots of fun, food, and friends. I entered a pot of "3 Bean Chili Verde" and to my surprise was awarded "3rd Place". Yeah me!

I love this time of year when there is a chill in the air, football games are being played, and the World Series in on. Not only does it mean it's FALL, but it also means that I can start making lots of pots of chili and different soups. There is nothing like a good pot of soup, hot rolls, honey, and friends and family to share it with.

Lots of new things are happening at Devine Memories. Check out our website for new classes, "Saturday Night Live" techniques classes, and wonderful gift ideas, cards, and other projects. I'm working on several projects and will post them on my blog over the next couple of days.

Right now I am caught up in the World Series. My guess is that Boston will win . . . taking the series in 5. The Rockies just had a great play with Holiday scoring a 3-run Home Run hit. They seem to be on a roll with just one out. I'm grateful to my boys who encouraged a love of sports in my life. *Final score of game 3 was 10 to 5 for Boston.

I'm off to finish studying for my Sunday School lesson tomorrow . . . it's my turn to teach. Great topic and message from the Apostle Paul as he pleads his case with King Agrippa . . . he never sways from his testimony and witness of Jesus Christ. This lesson is a natural sequel from my last lesson . . . "I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ." Have a great Sunday!

Scrapbook Weekend . . .

All of the sisters, daughters, and friends have gone and the house is very quiet and empty! The last five days have been so much FUN . . . it was good to have a houseful again.

It was our annual "Sister's Scrapbook" weekend and as usual it went by way too fast. We scrapped at home, scrapped at the store, ate out alot, stayed up late, laughed, shopped, cooked, and scrapped some more. Alan, my brother-in-law, was able to get in several days of golf, but also spent time relaxing in front of the television. Jen outdid herself again with her gynormous cinnamon rolls and housekeeping skills. Shelie outdid herself with an incredible pork roast. Michelle outdid herselft with a fun class and some way cute Halloween and Christmas swaps. Cindy outdid herself with no sleep and lots of stitching. Micah outdid herself with learning new scraping techniques and trying new foods. Sue outdid herself by staying up later for more days than she ever has in the past. Lauren definitely outdid the rest of us by completing 55 scrapbook pages. And Sandy outdid herself by not crying when the computer crashed on Sunday. Miss Jenna Rose outdid herself by hanging out with the girls and writing some sweet letters to everyone.

It was a great time . . . the bad thing is we did not take many pictures. Can you imagine that? Scrapbookers not taking pictures? We must have been too busy trying to get STUFF done!

For me it's going to be an early night . . . I have several days of sleep to catch up on and tomorrow the real world is waiting for all of us. To my sisters, daughters, Alan, and friends . . . I love you guys!

CK Phoenix Weekend!

It's scrapbook convention time again . . . Michelle and I are teaching classes at the CK Phoenix Convention this weekend. Come join me for "Mickey's in the House" on Friday or Saturday morning at 9:50 a.m. You can still buy tickets at the door. This is one fun class and the autograph album is so very cute! Michelle has crafted an adorable altered frame using "Fancy Pants" papers, glitter, vinyl rubons, and other fun stuff. Her classes are at 11:10 a.m. on both days. We would love to see you there!

The store, Devine Memories, will hold crops on Friday and Saturday night. We will scrapbook with a Luau theme and hula the night away. Lots of games, prizes, good food and fun! Call the store to reserve your spot. You can also stop by anytime Thursday, Friday, or Saturday for a free luggage tag make 'n take. What a unique and scrappy way to identify your totes, croppers, or shoulder bags. Hope to see you there!

Lance Anderson from Rusty Pickle taught a very cool 'Pirate Album' class this afternoon. He is here in town for the weekend to spend time with his favorite scrapbook stores. Did you know that Devine Memories was where he taught his very first scrapbook class in Arizona? We love "Mr. Pickle". Those who took the class had a very good time.

End of Summer!

Where did the last six months go? It has been crazy busy with vacation time, working, and trying to recover from being sick the past three weeks!

Michelle and I had a great trip to Utah to spend time with Jen and her family. It was one of the few summers that the Utah cousins were not able to spend their vacation time in Arizona. All of the kids were so excited to entertain us and keep us busy. We went to movies, ate lots of food, went shopping, visited Grandpa and Val, and played at the water park. It was a short week but we have so much FUN!

Unfortunately, we picked up some type of bug and Michelle, Jen, and I have been battling a very pesky stomach parasite. I don't remember being so sick . . . I still go to bed as early as I can and sleep at least 10-12 hours a night! Living on soda crackers, ginger ale and pepto is not my idea of a good time. The bug has a name . . . "Cryptosporidium" . . . sounds like something that would put Superman down. Well, it put down three SUPER WOMEN and we are still fighting back.

A lot is going on at the scrapbook store. Devine Memories is a silver level sponsor for the upcoming "AUTISM WALK" which will be held on November 4, 2007. As many of you know, this is our charity of choice and we will be sponsoring a team. We would love to have you come and walk with us. We had an awesome time during the "Meet the Teacher" event today at the store. So many wonderful ladies attended the class taught by four wonderful and creative teachers. It was a great day. Michelle and I are also teaching classes at the CK Phoenix Convention, September 14th and 15th. It would be fun to see you there!

Why we love the desert!

It has been very, very HOT for the past several days. It's those kind of days when you are so thankful for air conditioning and ice and ceiling fans and cold showers! For those of us who live in Arizona, we accept this as a temporary inconvenience and look forward to the other nine months of the year when the weather is perfect! I thought it would be fun to list the reasons why we love living in the desert . . .

. We get up very early to exercise and put in our 5 miles of walking. This is the best time to visit with our neighbors because everyone is outside at that time of day.
. We get to go to Sonic as many times a day as we want for ice cream, slushes, ice, etc.
. We have a special savings plan which lets us wash our clothes and run our dishwashers in the middle of the night to save on electricity and keep the house from getting too warm.
. We get to eat out as much as we want so we don't have to turn on the stove or oven.
. We all hang out at the community swimming pool and and leave with a perfect golden tan. It makes our teeth look whiter without those expensive whitening treatments.
. We stick our heads in the refrigerator and freezer, not because we are hungry, but to cool off!
. We get to lay around and watch tv all day, or play video games, or surf the web, because it is too hot to do anything else.
. We dream of cooler temperatures, lower electricity bills, and trips to San Diego.
. We spend lots of time at the mall and the movie theatres as the air conditioning is free and usually 10 degrees colder than we keep it at home.
. We enjoy lots of watermelon, strawberries, cherries, and other fruits along with smoothies, Jamba Juice, Golden Spoon yogurt, shaved ice, etc.
. The roads are safer during the summer . . . the winter visitors don't like the heat and won't be back until October.
. But most of all, we are 10 pounds thinner in the summer because we spend so much time running from our air conditioned house to our air conditioned car to our air conditioned office to the air conditioned store and back to our air conditioned car and our air conditioned house. The power company loves us and so do the air conditioner repairmen!

Seriously, even with the heat, LIFE IS GREAT IN MESA, ARIZONA!

Mike completed his Family Practice Residency training progam tonight with a wonderful graduation ceremony and program. He received an award as Chief Resident, but he was also awarded the "Resident Teacher of the Year" which is a great honor and tribute to him. One thing that touched my heart was hearing what his patient's said about him and how they loved and appreciated his care and concern for them. I even learned that he has one couple who travels 4 hours each way just to see him in the Residency Clinic. That makes a mom proud and brought a tear to my eye!

We didn't take any formal pictures, but I wanted to share a couple of Mike with the kids. Melissa and his family have sacrificed so much these past eleven years to finally see all of this hard work pay off. But Mike has always made sure that his family comes first. He will be opening his own practice in Gilbert, Arizona and I'm sure he will continue with the same care and compassion he has given during his Residency. So, from the bottom of my heart . . . Mike, congratulations for a job well done! I love you!

Dance Recital

My grandaughter, Jenna, was in a dance recital last Friday night. Because it was held at Mountain View, she said she was in the "High School Musical"! It was a great recital and all of the dancers, girls and boys, were so much fun to watch. The littlest ones were very cute as they jumped and turned and waved their hands in the air.

Jenna performed in two dances . . . one was more jazz and the other to the "Tiki Room" song from Disneyland. She has a natural rhythm and can be caught moving and swinging to almost any song. Jaden and Tanner, her brothers, were not as excited to watch the recital, but in the end they had a fun time. I caught a classic picture of Jaden while we were waiting in the auditorium. It's performances like these that make life special!

Mike and Melissa had a new baby girl on Tuesday, June 12th. Ava Lauren weighed in at 9 lbs 3 oz and is a CUTIE! She looks just like her brother Jax . . . same eyes, nose, and chin. I just love new babies. There is something so sweet and peaceful about them . . . coming straight from heaven, I wish they could talk and share a thing or two.

This make "13" grandchildren for Grandma Sandy. I love it. I wouldn't want it any other way. I am truly blessed with a wonderful family, great kids, super sons and daughters-in-law, and the very BEST grandkids. Life is truly sweet.

Grounded!

When is too much travel too much? I am so glad to be out of the sky and safely grounded! It has been an incredible five months and I have had a great time traveling and visiting new places, but I am ready for some stay at home time. Just a quick recap of the places I have been this year: Salt Lake City, Anaheim, Hawaii (5 Islands), Bloomington, Tampa, Dayton, and Orem. I've put in thousands of miles from one side of the United States to the other and now I am glad to be home.

Speaking of home, the Christmas decorations have finally come down, the stack of mail is slowly decreasing, the laundry and dishes are waiting to be put away, my scrapbook supplies need to be reorganized, the dust bunnies have multiplied, and the lawn (what is left of it) needs to be watered! I am ready to dust, clean, throw away, and organize. There is something healing about a good "spring cleaning" even if spring has past and it is now summer! I am excited to find things I forgot about or didn't even know I had. So . . . this weekend is dedicated to housecleaning, playing, movie going, and even some relaxing.

Can you believe it? I actually have a minute to update my blog, even if it is 1:00 o'clock in the morning! I wanted to share some pictures from the Mesa Scrapbook Convention. We had a great time and were very proud of our little booth and mini store. We showcased some fun new products, had an awesome make 'n take, and had a blast teaching classes. Michelle and I will be teaching our convention classes at the store this month, just in case you missed taking them at the show.

I just got back from St. Pete's Beach in Florida. I was there administering Board Certification exams. The beach was beautiful . . . even though I only had a couple of hours to enjoy it! It was a quick 2-day stop on my way to Utah to visit the Erekson's and participate in Kira's baptism. What a temperature shock! It was 84 beautiful degrees in Florida and a bitter 40 degrees in Utah. The mountains were covered in snow clouds the entire weekend and the sun didn't come out to shine until I was headed to the airport on Sunday afternoon. Mesa is now a lovely 95+ degrees. I can't believe how quickly it has turned into summer. You gotta love it!

Wishing everyone a wonderful Mother's Day! I am so blessed with such fantastic children and incredible grandchildren. I am also grateful for good friends and people who continue to reach out in love and help and support. That's what it's all about . . . loving, caring, and sharing!

Life continues to be crazy busy. I am headed for Ohio for more exams and meetings but am counting the days until I can stop this madness and spend some time at home. There is light at the end of the tunnel and I won't hesitate to say that "Life continues to be GREAT in Mesa, Arizona"!

April/May and September/October are killer months for me! In between scrapbook conventions, fundraisers, Board exams, working at the hospital, running a store, and traveling, I don't have too much time to catch up to myself. My living room looks like a storage shed, my bedroom is one BIG closet, and the mail just keeps piling higher and higher. BUT . . . there is light at the end of the tunnel and I can't wait for the merry-go-round to slow down and let me off for a few days. My best "guesstimate" is that it will be sometime the end of May!

The Autism Fundraiser is well under way . . . to date we have raised over $2000. We will continue to sell paper "Puzzle" pieces for $1.00 through the end of April at Devine Memories. We will also be selling these puzzle pieces at the Mesa CK Convention along with "Puzzle Piece Charm" necklaces. I just love my necklace . . . I have "3" silver puzzle charms . . . one for Jake, one for Jaden, and one for McKay. All proceeds from these sales will be donated to Autism Speaks to help raise awareness and fund research for this puzzling syndrome. Many thanks to all of you who have participated with us in this worthy cause. If you are out of town and would like to help, just give us a call at the store and we will be happy to accept your donation over the phone. Together we can make a difference!

We are just days away from the Mesa CK Convention . . . we have been cutting, and packaging, and putting together kits for our classes. We have also been pricing and getting ready for our vendor booth. We have some great product and will debut a brand new paper line . . . The Paper Element. Michelle is using one of their lines in her convention class. My class features Dreamstreet Designs, and Kim's class is centered around the new Cosmo Cricket Dutch Girl paper. Other product that will be available in our booth will be Prima flowers, Scotch Tacky Glue (*we can't scrap without it), All My Memories totes, incredible page kits, funky finds, ribbons, wooden albums, and our very own "Devine Memories" t-shirts. Come see us in Booth 100 . . . we would love to visit with you!

Jen and her family will be here Wednesday morning (about 3:00 a.m.) They are coming for Spring Break and we are very excited to have Jen here to help with the Convention classes. She will be an incredible T.A. (Teacher's Aide). We are also going to celebrate Kira's "8th" birthday. I can't believe that she is that old already. I will be going to Utah the first weekend in May for her baptism.

So . . . you can see that we are BUSY, EXCITED, HAPPY, and TIRED . . . all at the same time. From my point of view "Life is Great in Mesa, AZ!"

Is is really the end of March?

The 1st of March was just yesterday and now it's the end of the month! Granted it has been busy and I was out of town last weekend . . . but, at this pace, I will be 75 years old before I know it. Well, maybe not that bad, but time sure spins around a lot faster today than it did twenty years ago. And somehow, we seem to fit in three times as much stuff as we did then. I can't imagine what it will be like over the next tweny years!

It's late, but I wanted to check in and let everyone know I was still kicking and going strong! Something like the energizer bunny . . . I just keep going and going and going . . . . .

Either the days are getting shorter or I have way too much to do! We are busy getting ready for the Mesa CK Convention which will be held April 20 and 21 at the Mesa Convention Center. Michelle, Kim, and I are all teaching classes again . . . and they are dang cute! We are also sponsoring a retail booth in the vendor faire. We have been planning the booth layout as well as getting the product ordered and priced.

We are excited to be debuting a new paper line called "The Paper Element". We will also have "Cosmo Cricket" and "Dreamstreet Papers" . . . two of our very favorite lines. You will want to check out the fabulous page kits we have put together, the fun and funky finds, as well as other can't live without scrapbook supplies! We would love to see you in our classes or come by the booth and say "Hi".

Lots of things going on at the store over the next few weeks. Our AUTISM premier event will be held Saturday, April 7th. A great mini album class will be offered at 10:00 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. that day. A gala raffle event is being held that evening. Check out the Devine Memories website for more information.

Teresa Collins, Junkitz designer, will be teaching a class on Friday, April 6th. This is one class you won't want to miss!

The weather in Mesa has been beautiful . . . some would say too hot already . . . but it is supposed to cool down some over the next few days. The orange trees are in blossom and smell so GOOD! The grass is starting to turn green again and the sunsets are out of this world. So, if you are looking for something fun to do, or a place to get a head start on your tan . . . come visit us. Lost is Found!

I thought I lost one of my camera SD cards with pictures from the first two days in Hawaii. Last night when I was putting the rest of my clothes away, I found the SD card and $12.00 in the pocket of a pair of jeans . . . what a relief and nice surprise. I was able to download the pictures and treat myself to Panda's for lunch today.

We are busy getting things ready for the Mesa CK Convention. Michelle, Kim, and I are teaching some great classes and there is still time for you to sign up and spend some time with us. We are also hosting a retail sales booth this year and working diligently to get supplies stocked up for that. We will post samples of the classes on the Devine Memories website this week. I hope you can join us!

The weather has been perfect. I sat out on the back porch today to eat lunch. It was nice and very relaxing. The front door is open and I can hear and smell the water from the sprinklers. The lime and orange trees are beginning to blossom and the fragrance is wonderful!

Each island was a little unique in the geography and foilage . . . but it was all very green and beautiful! Thought I would throw in a couple pictures of the wildlife also. Hawaiian Scrapbook Cruise

Remember this post? I can't believe that six months have gone by and now it's time to jump on an airplane and head for Hawaii! Shelie and I are soooooo excited. I'll be sure to keep you posted as we tour all day and scrap all night. Some of the things we will be doing are parasailing, whale watching, helicopter riding, ziplining, luauing, beach combing, shopping, eating, and scrapbooking! This is sure to be a "once in a lifetime" experience. ALOHA!

My sister Shelie called me the other day and asked if I wanted to go with her to Hawaii on a scrapbook cruise . . . how could I resist? The reservations are made and we will be spending a wonderful week touring the islands of Hawaii during the day and scrapbooking to our hearts content at night. This doesn't happen until next February, but I am SOOOO excited about how much fun this trip will be. The last time I was in Hawaii was in 1965 when I was a teenager returning home from living in the Samoan islands. I'm sure the main island has changed alot, but the allure of the islands is already haunting my dreams. This is a CK cruise . . . so I would guess there will be an on ship scrapbook store, classes, etc. When I get more information, I will be sure to share . . . not to make anyone jealous . . . well, maybe a little! I'll be sure to take lots of pictures, run my toes through the sand, and eat lots of wonderful food for everyone. I'm off to brush up on my hula moves! I used to dance on the docks of Pago Pago and welcome in the cruise boats . . . it might have been a little strange for tourists to be greeted by a blonde, blue-eyed native . . . but I definetely had fun! ALOHA!

Can't Sleep . . .

Have you ever had one of those nights when your brain won't shut down and you can't sleep? I have been up sketching . . . valentine cards, mini albums, Disney pages, etc. It's a good thing that the creative energy is flowing, but I do need to get up in the morning!

CHA was wonderful . . . we saw so many new things . . . and ordered many more for the store. The new product will start rolling in over the next few weeks. Exciting stuff. We had a blast at Disneyland! We were able to play for three days inbetween the shopping and buying. We also spent an hour with "Martha Stewart"! It was fun to see her in person and listen to her ideas, philosophy of life, and where she thinks the craft industry is headed. And thanks to Amy O'Neil, Devine Memories won a display rack full of the new "Chasing Butterfiles" line from Daisy D's! When they called our name you could have heard us scream all the way back home to Mesa.

We have some wonderful classes this week . . . all related to Valentine's Day and showing that special someone how much you care. You can see some of the projects on the Devine Memories website. My card class in Tuesday, Michelle has an adorable mini album on Thursday and a sweet wooden love album on Saturday. Kimberly Kwan is our guest teacher this month and has an incredible altered book project on Saturday afternoon. You will want to take all of these classes!

I'm getting ready for the cruise to Hawaii. Shelie and I will be leaving Sunday for a wonderful week of sight seeing, playing, and scrapbooking fun. I talked to Lisa Bearnson and Becky Higgins at the CHA Convention. Lisa was very excited about the cruise . . . she said it was pretty exclusive and that only "60" women will be participating. We should have a great time. . . they have some fun projects planned for us.

Well, I best be off to bed. It's going to be a busy week . . . life is great in Mesa, Arizona!

CHA and Sneak Peak!

Well, we're off to CHA (Craft and Hobby Show) to see all of the wonderful and "can't live without" new scrapbook stuff! It will be a whirlwind trip . . . so much to see. There are five of us going . . . Me, Michelle, Amy, Kim, and Jen is coming from Utah. We are soooooo excited. We also get to spend some time with the "Mouse" tomorrow and hopefully a little bit more on the other days before we come home.

Boot Camp and Tulips!

We made it through our first week of "Boot Camp" and are still alive! Michelle and I and a couple of her friends signed up for a 6 week exercise camp at the gym which started last week. This has been a challenge . . . not only do we have to be at the gym at 5:30 a.m., but they work us non-stop for an hour every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I must admit that I feel really good after the work-out, even though the muscles ache and the body hurts and I have to get up sooooo early! For those of you who know me best, I would much rather stay up late and sleep in the next day. Anyway, I'm psyching up for week "two". It has been rainy and gray and cold this weekend which will make it much harder to get up tomorrow morning . . . but, I have promised myself that I will do it. I will keep you posted on the progress.

A very bright spot has been a vase of tulip bulbs that a friend picked up for me from COSTCO. Twelve bulbs are growing in water in a glass vase. It has been fascinating to watch the bulbs sprout, grow, and now bloom into beautiful purple tulips. The flowers are guaranteed to bloom for several days, even into weeks if taken care of the right way. Did you know that you can extend the life of a tulip by cutting a small slit on one side of the stem just below the flower? Apparently this directs the energy of the bulb to the slit and not to the flower . . . which means the flower lasts longer. This has definitely added a bit of spring to the unusually cold winter weather in Arizona.

Slow to post, but here they are. It is almost as cold here in Arizona as it was in Utah last weekend! The coldfront that is going across the United States has hit hard and has all of us bundled up and staying inside with our heaters and jammies on. But, I must admit it is a nice change. So . . . the weather report from my perspective is cold, clear skies, slight winds, maybe some rain, snow in the high country, and a great life in Mesa, Arizona!

Utah Trip!

I spent this past weekend visiting Jen's family in Utah! What a wonderful trip . . . it was cold, and it snowed, and all I did was play with the grandkids, go out to dinner, see a movie, and visit with my dad. It was just what I needed. I really enjoyed the change in temperature and wish I could have brought some of the cold weather home with me. It was 75 degrees in Phoenix yesterday!

It's a crazy busy week . . . the store is celebrating is "1st" birthday. We have lots of great classes and crops planned. I can't believe that it has been a year since we refurbished the store and had our "Grand Opening"! I guess we better take that sign off the storefront window. It's official, Devine Memories is here to stay.

I got some great pictures while I was in Utah and will post them later today. I loved being with Jen and her family. I love them sooooo much! It was good therapy for all of us.

New Friend Max . . .

Yupp, I have a new friend and his name is ProMax . . . Max for short! My water heater bit the dust, rusted away, and went to water heater heaven. So, Max came to my rescue and I am so glad he did! Fortunately I caught the old model before it completely shut down, even though the bath tub ran out of hot water this morning more quickly than I would have liked. Afterall, at 5:45 a.m., when it is dark and cold outside and you really don't want to get out of bed, the last thing you need is a cold water wake-up call!

It has been one of THOSE days! I am still working on hospital stuff, at home, and have another early morning meeting tomorrow. Anything that could have been a challenge today was. Too many critical deadlines, last minute requests, and emergency priorities that needed to be accomplished. Thank heaven for Cheryl and all of her hard work! I'm hoping to get things finished in the next couple of hours and will then go to bed. . . I am actually ready . . . wearing red flannel jammies, slippers on the feet, and the cat cuddled up on the chair beside me.

Even amidst all of the days ups and downs, it has been a good one. Everyday you wake up and accomplish something is a GREAT day. . . I just managed to put several days into this one. Have a wonderful week!

Starting a new year . . .

Out with the old . . . in the with new. Are you thinking New Year's resolutions like I am? I have been doing a lot of contemplating and soul searching about those things I want to continue to improve on, those things I want to change, and those new things I would like to work on this year. I am grateful for this new year and the opportunity it gives me to look at my life in future and in retrospect, and to do a personal inventory about where I am, where I have been, and where I want to be going.

Life is a series of ups and downs, highs and lows, happy and sad, and good and bad days. I have learned that we can't appreciate the good days without experiencing a few bad ones along the way. One of my favorite quotes has always been: "We don't have problems, only challenges and opportunities". I truly believe that the perspective with which we live our lives helps us to navigate and manifest the outcome. Sometimes it feels like we are rowing against the tide, but just think about the strength we gain when we continue to row and fight and work hard to accomplish our goals.

It's not easy accepting that we have weaknesses or that there are things we need to change. It takes a lot of courage to look ourselves in the mirror and be honest in making a list of resolutions or goals. But there is great satisfaction in doing that, and in setting out on a task to make change or to improve upon the positives in our lives. AND, it doesn't have to be a January thing . . . it should be an ongoing evaluation and introspective review. If we wait a year to evaluate how we have done or how we are doing, we will probably lose sight of the goal and not accomplish as much as we could have.

I most want to strengthen my spiritual self so that I am prepared to meet life's challenges and handle them with my emotional and physical self. It takes physical, emotional, and spiritual energy to live in the world today. My goal is to keep life in an "eternal perspective", to live my life in a manner that will bring me peace and help me work towards the ultimate goal of perfection. That probably sounds a little self-serving or maybe even overwhelming, but that is my goal. To work with my creator to make of myself all that I can be, and all that I am meant to be.

So . . . some of my goals will be very personal, and some of my goals will be family related. Some of my goals will deal with work, and some of my goals will be more task oriented . . . BUT, the ultimate purpose of all of these goals will be to help me become the person I want to be. We are all a "work in progress" and what a wonderful work we can all become!

Happy New Year! I know that my life will be great this year in Mesa, Arizona. And may it be great in your part of the world, too!

Just wanted to share a few pictures from Christmas Eve and Christmas Day . . . we had fun decorating plates, creating a Christmas tree village, eating, playing, and opening gifts. We missed our Utah cousins who were not able to be with us this year. We spent a great weekend with them over Thanksgiving, but it just isn't the same without everyone at home to share the magic of the season! We did talk to them on the phone and I am going to visit for a long weekend in January.

JOY . . . because Christmas is just a few days away and THANKS because of the many things that bless and touch my life.

It is a perfect "stay-at-home" day with the colder weather, sprinkles of rain, and gifts to wrap. I have Christmas movies on, the tree lit, packages, paper and ribbon spread everywhere, and a grateful heart.

My dear daughter recently brought to my attention the need to stop and re-evaluate my priorities and to remember what is most precious to me. We have been so caught up in life . . . working and operating the store . . . running from one place to the next . . . and trying to keep some type of sanity at home. You can only burn the candle for so long before it burns out, and I am grateful for a wise daughter who has the courage to realize that fact and wants to do something about it. After all, when this life ends it won't be how many hours we worked, or how financially successful we were, or how stressed we let ourselves be that will matter. What is the final test is how well we lived our life, what values we treasured and kept, and what we did to bring love and hope and joy into the lives of others!

I know that we need to be responsible for meeting our earthly needs, i.e., food, shelter, etc., but ultimately we are accountable for our stewardship and what we did with our time and our talents and with the promises we made and kept. I am grateful for this time of year and the reminder that "Jesus is the reason for the season". I am also grateful for children who love me and care about me and help me be the best "Sandy" I can be!

Enjoy the holiday season. Take time to be with those you love and take time for yourself. Afterall, if we get burned out we won't be able to help those who need us most! Life continues to be GREAT in Mesa, Arizona.

It's beginning to look a lot like . . .

Not that Christmas is only nine days away but, I finally put up some decorations and with the twinkling lights, the stockings, and the tree . . . it does feel and look a little bit more like the holidays! I must admit that it is an abbreviated version over past years, but my favorites are on display where all can enjoy them. I love my wooden tree. A friend of mine made it for me several years ago. The picture doesn't do it justice because you can't really see the angel or the pine cones or the holly berries or the sweet Baby Jesus in a manger. When the white twinkle lights are one, it really is a great tree! I collect bears, and snowmen, and Santa Clauses! Only a few of them get to share Christmas with me this year, but some of my most favorites are tucked around the fireplace.

We had our Devine Memories employee party last week and I just had to share a picture of Jenna . . . so proud of the "white elephant" gift that Amy (reluctantly) gave to her. We had a great time and laughed alot while we were stealing or coniving on how to get the presents we wanted.

I now have a "Personal Assistant" which is the most exciting thing I have accomplished this week. It is a Sprint Pocket PC 6700 and I am in love already. The "most bestest" part is the calendar function . . . I now know where I am going, where I need to be, and who or what I want to see! I spent last night putting in all of the phone numbers, adding dates to the calendar, and learning how to text message. My only question is WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG?

There is a fun "Make 'n Take" at the store tomorrow. I have two different samples to choose from. We are altering a star gift box that can be filled with candy, goodies, or other fun stuff. Stop by the store anytime between 2 and 4 p.m. Cost is only $7.50 for each gift box you make.

Why does life seem to get sooooo busy just before the holidays? I know there are the same number of hours in a day, the same number of days in the week, and the same number of weeks in the year, but for some reason I have lost some of them and am trying to play the catch-up game. Rusty Pickle F A M I L Y Album

Here's a quick peak at the F A M I L Y accordion album being taught this Saturday at the store. The talented design team for Rusty Pickle put this great class together and I am lucky enough to be teaching it. What a wonderful gift for parents or grandparents. As the week is almost over . . . at least the Monday through Friday part of it . . . I don't know where the time has gone. Can you believe it is less than three weeks until Christmas? I have most of my shopping done, but haven't put up any decorations yet or had a chance to get my cards put together and mailed out. I love this time of the year and the change in spirit it brings with it. I am enchanted by all of the twinkling lights and can spend hours driving around at night looking at all of the transformed houses. They look like MAGIC! Every day a few more houses are decorated and the neighborhood is turning into a fairyland. My ten year old neighbor stopped by to help me unload the car yesterday and volunteered to help put up my lights . . . he was amazed that I hadn't done that yet! I just need to take the time and do it.

The weather has turned warm again, and I was just getting ready to change over the closet and get out all of the sweaters, flannel jammies, and fleece blankets. The warm spell is not supposed to last . . . and I'm hoping it doesn't. Otherwise, I will have to turn down the air and pretend like it is cold outside. On that note, I'm off to bed in hopes of sugar plum fairies dancing in my head. Maybe they will give me a hint of what I will find under the tree on Christmas morning . . . if I ever get the tree out!

Homemade Soup!

There is nothing better than a pot of homemade soup. I made a pot of turkey rice soup this afternoon . . . the weather is just perfect for this type of venue. I love to make soup . . . and I love to share my creations with others. In fact, I have some people who call me to say that "they are sick" just to get a pot of my homemade soup! I know that Michelle has not been feeling well (I sent her home early yesterday from the late night crop) SO, I gave her a pot of my soup with a plate of buttermilk biscuits. That was a good thing because sharing always makes the pot taste better!

To make the night even more perfect, I had a fire in the fireplace while I was working on my class samples for this week. The F A M I L Y album created by "Rusty Pickle" is dang cute and with a few added embellishments, it is sure to make a great gift for any member of your family. You can see a partially finished sample on the Devine Memories website.

It was a wonderful Sunday. I was spiritually fed with sacrament meeting, sharing of testimonies, and lessons taught. A central theme was having the courage to do what you know is right! It's always good to have that gentle reminder to help put your life back into perspective. I am so grateful for this time of year and for the remembrance we have of the life of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The holiday season seems to calm the soul and bring the end of a year to full circle, ready to start again with the new year!

I went Christmas shopping a couple of nights ago. It was FUN! I have to admit that I did splurge a little on myself . . . some new clothes, shoes, music CD's, and other stuff. I found some really, really good hot chocolate mixes. Right now I am sipping on a cup of Mexican Chocolate . . . great chocolate taste with a hint of cinnamon. Again, the hot chocolate is another great companion to the homemade soup and the warmth of the fireplace. I even bought myself a new snowman mug!

From my perspective, LIFE IS GREAT IN MESA, ARIZONA! Have a wonderful week.

Baby . . . It's COLD outside!

It is very cold in Mesa, Arizona. Ok . . . it's not below zero cold, but it is cold for our neck of the woods. It is also very exciting because I can get out the sweaters, and long sleeve shirts, and cordoroy slacks and pretend like it is winter. I can also pile on the blankets and pull out the flannel jammies, and drink hot chocolate, and make lots of pots of homemade soup! Like the song says . . . it's a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful time of the year.

I just finished creating my class project for CKC Mesa. The deadline date for project submission is December 1st, and then the waiting game begins until we are notified if and when our classes have been approved. The Mesa Convention is in April and we will be sponsoring a booth as well as teaching classes. Great fun for the store!

The house is very quiet. All of the Thanksgiving visitors went home on Sunday and I really miss them. We had a great weekend and even celebrated Luke's 10th birthday a couple of days early. It was fun to have him here for his party. He requested a "FEAST" even though we just had Thanksgiving dinner the day before. His feast was barbecued chicken, mashed potatoes, and his mom's homemade rolls. Dessert was ice cream sandwiches. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed a second day of feasting and festivity.

I've been burning the candle at too many ends and it feels like there is no candle left! I have had early morning meetings every day this week . . . tomorrow is no exception. But, there is light at the end of the tunnel and I am looking forward to the weekend. We have a great "Make 'n Take" at the store on Saturday. It's a wooden wall art project to hang your Christmas stockings on. There is a picture on the Devine Memories website. You need to sign up for the project ahead of time so we have enough kits for everyone. Stop by the store anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to make your board. Cost of the class is $14.00.

Well, it's off to bed and flannel pj's and my favorite down comforter. I know it's cold outside because the heater has come on a couple of times tonight and the thermostat is set at 62 degrees! I hope my Utah kids are staying warm . . . it's supposed to be below freezing there. Speaking of freezing, we do have a temperature warning and need to cover up our fruit trees tonight. Have a good night's sleep and a great day tomorrow!

Thankful Day!

What a wonderful day! It started very early, about 6:30 a.m., when Jen and I got up to get the 22 lb turkey ready for the oven. The bird and been unthawing in the refrigerator since Saturday, but was still a bit frozen, so he was put in a cool bath while the stuffing was made and the oven heated. We baked a razzleberry pie while the bird prep was going on . . . put the turkey in the oven . . . and headed out the door to pick up Michelle and go shopping. To our disappointment, all of the stores were closed with the exception of a few, so we went to Walmart to pick up some last minute items for lunch and to check out the electronics and toys for the kids. We found a few good bargains and got home about 11:30, just in time to peel the potatoes, get the homemade rolls going, make the gravy, put the fruit salad together, and set up the tables.

All of the kids were home this year! Jen and family came down from Utah on Wednesday, Mike had the day off from the hospital, Tom was called in to work early but made it for lunch, and Michelle and her family are just around the corner. All together we had "21" for dinner. It was wonderful! I love holidays . . . but I love being with family even more!

There are so many things to be thankful for: family, friends, health, a home, a job that I love, freedom, religion, testimony, blue skies, turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, Jen's rolls, stuffing, hot pie and ice cream, swings, flowers, birds, laughter, hugs, grandchildren, sleep, computers, shopping, dishwashers, pillows, hot water, a clean kitchen, naps, a house full of kids, leftovers, joy, unconditional love, talking to my dad, and so much more!

I hope you all had a great day and were able to enjoy those things that are important to you. As for me, Life is Great in Mesa, Arizona!

Getting ready for Turkey days!

Thanksgiving is just around the corner . . . that means that all of the kids and grandkids will be coming to Grandma's house. Remember the song, "Over the River and Through the Woods"? Well, we don't have any rivers to cross or a whole lot of woods to get through, but the Erekson's are making the trek from Utah and we are soooo excited!

I am busy getting the house ready for company, trying to get some "work" work done, finish class projects for Devine Memories, and getting some extra rest because I know next week will have a whole lot of playing going on!

I love the holidays and having family close by. What can be better than that?

Life has been very busy this past week with work, classes, family, and just life! I have decided that I need a personal organizer . . . kind of like a personal shopper . . . to keep my schedule straight. I haven't found the right one yet, but am leaning toward a PDA/cell phone combination, and I need it QUICK! As I have been trying to juggle two jobs, the store, and my personal life, it is very apparent that I need some help. I really like the models with the slide out keyboard . . . this will be my Christmas present to myself.

I have also been working on class samples and will post some "sneak peaks" later this week. We have had some really great classes at Devine Memories and there are more to come in December as we get closer to the holidays.

We are also having a "Scrapmart Boutique" the day after Thanksgiving from 9-9. There will be several tables full of clearance items . . . tables with cute, already made boutique gifts . . . and all shoppers will receive a 15% discount off their total purchase (not including clearance or boutique items) that day. Grandma News . . .

I received a FUN telephone call the other night . . . Marlee, Hannah, McKay, and Jax called to tell me that their mom was having a BABY! They were all so excited. Mike and Melissa are pregant with #5 and the baby is due next June. What a wonderful phone call. I thought we were finished with grandbabies, but I'm glad that we're not! In fact, they are talking about adding a #6 sometime down the road.

I love babies . . . especially grandbabies! You love your children, but for some unknown reason you "double love" your grandchildren. Maybe it's because you can spend time with them, and spoil them, and teach them bad tricks, and then send them home. I remember when Izak was about 18 months old. I was visiting Jen and Tom in Utah and we were driving home from the airport. I was sitting in the back seat with "Z" and we were laughing and giggling and having a wonderful time. Jen turned around and asked me what I was doing . . . well, I was teaching Izak to "SPIT". Too much fun!

I love my children and I love my grandchildren . . . all "12" of them. I couldn't be more blessed. For me, family is the BEST and that is the number one reason why Life is Great in Mesa, AZ!

Back from Pine . . .

Back from Pine . . . what a great getaway . . . even if it was just for one night! The weather was perfect. We woke up to 30 degrees this morning and the air was crisp and smelled so good. It was fun to sit in front of the fireplace and hear the logs crackle and pop . . . such a sharp contrast to the quiet and serenity outside. I took pictures of the early morning and then several others throughout the day. Can't you almost feel the fall in the air, smell the pine needles, and hear the babble of the creek?

It was a great leadership activity for the youth of the ward. They worked hard and planned several activities for next year. They learned how to consider the needs of others, set goals, plan with a purpose, and work together to put together some awesome activities. There was plenty of food and fun and games and singing and laughter. What an awesome group of young men and young women!

My alarm went off several times while I was gone . . . not sure what happened, but everything was in its place when I got home. My cell phone was out of range and I didn't get any calls about the problem until this morning. Apparently the police responded all three times and then got worried because no one could get in touch with me. I am happy to report that I am safe and sound and rested from sleeping in the pines.

Everyone needs to get away sometime, even if it is just an overnighter away from the hustle and bustle of the real world. It does a body and mind much good and helps keep things in perspective. Have the rest of a good weekend and remember that Life is Great is Mesa, Arizona!

Work at home . . .

It's a work at home, PJ's kind of day. It feels good to be able to work from the home office today and get caught up on a few things. I am going up to Pine Top for a church youth leadership training conference later today and tomorrow. I hear that it is COLD up there so will be packing the warmer clothes . . . actually, that is exciting! It will be fun to get the sweaters out and enjoy a change of weather. I'll be sure to take some pictures of the pine trees, leaves, and other exciting stuff to post when I get back.

The first thing they did when they came into the house was dump all of their candy on the floor to see who got the most. I remember those days. I also remember going through the kids candy to take out my favorites, because they didn't need that much sugar.

These days my taste in treats has changed. My new favorite fruit is an Asian Pear. They are really good at this time of year . . . so juicy and luscious. I ate the last one tonight and was almost tempted to make a run to the grocery store so I would have some for tomorrow's breakfast. Doesn't it look good?

It's been a good day. We have been overwhelmed with the amount of new product and boxes that have been delivered at the store. We thought things would be spaced out a little bit more, but the shelves are full and our little scrapbook store is ready for the holidays. Don't forget to check out the class calendar or stop by to see, and smell, and take home some scrapbook stuff!

Just because . . .

I sent myself some flowers today, tulips in a funky orange pail . . . just because! I love flowers and it's a fun treat to have someone ring your doorbell and hand you a big box from FTD with your name on it. It makes you feel special! I also love tulips and was excited to bring a little bit of sunshine into the house. I hope you enjoy them as much and I am going to.

The "Countdown to Christmas" class was so much fun and it really did take us "6" hours to complete the project . . . but, we did finish and what a cute book and keepsake for holidays to come. Sherry B was the first to finish, which also broke the long standing record of Colleen always being the one to complete a class project before everyone else. Good job, Sherry!

Tomorrow is the big holiday workshop at Devine Memories. I am putting the finishing touches on my class kits and am excited to meet new people and spend time with good friends. We've have a wonderful response to the classes and want to thank all of our great customers for supporting this event. It will be a marathon day, but we will accomplish lots and have fun doing it.

Peanut Butter Toast!

I just finished putting together the kits for the "Christmas Countdown" class that I will be teaching at the store on Thursday, actually later today, and I had a craving for a piece of peanut butter toast. It had been a long time since I had done that . . . the smell of the bread toasting, spreading the peanut butter and honey, and then savoring the first bite was heavenly. I think it's the change in weather and the need for comfort food when it's late at night and you are tired. Anyway, take time to enjoy the simple things in life . . . it will put a smile on your face!

I met a nice gentleman from Massachusetts on my way home from Las Vegas this last trip. He was talking about a cottage in Maine, the changing leaves of New England, and the crispness in the air. That's somewhere I would love to visit sometime. I could hardly wait for fall to come to Arizona . . . well, it's here!

When I woke up this morning I could see it, feel it, and almost taste it in the air. There is definitely a change in the weather, the Mexican Bird of Paradise are blooming, the pomegranates are ripening, the grass is browning, and I am able to leave my front door open and let some of the outdoors inside. What a wonderful time of year. This is why we live in Arizona!

I look forward to the change of seasons . . . there is something rejuvenating about starting a new life chapter . . . it helps me reflect on where I have been and where I want to be going. I remember more frequently the things I am thankful for and all of the blessing that I enjoy. One of our teachers and Design Team members at Devine Memories has issued a challenge. Check out Kim Hesson's blog and start your own gratitude journal. You might even want to scrapbook some pages of the people and things you are thankful for. It's good therapy and will help document a wonderful bit of yourself for your family and friends.

Good to be HOME!

I have been on the road for the past week and am so glad to be home. Memory Trends was a FUN and PRODUCTIVE experience with lots of new products and ideas for the scrapbook store. We picked up some new lines, met some wonderful people, and are excited about future ventures. The new COSMO CRICKET Christmas and Souvenir lines are already in and they are soooo nice. We also expect the new BAZZILL BLING paper to be on the shelves soon. I know you will love using their new paper line for your holiday and other special events pages. We will be highlighting several of the new products and paper lines at the store . . . so come on in and see, and feel, and smell the new stuff!

I went back to Las Vegas this past weekend to conduct Board Certification exams. This was a quick trip but the company and food was great. We ate dinner at Delmonico's and everything was exceptional . . . a five course dinner with salad, bruschetta, mahi mahi, tri-tip steak, and banana foster ice cream pie. Of course, the service was excellent and you could definitely taste the Emeril "BAM" in each of the dishes.

The one thing I didn't get to do - on both trips - was take a gondola ride at the Venetian. That will have to wait until next time. One thing I did do was pick up a cold, so after I take care of a few things at the store and the house, I am going to put my jammies on and crawl into bed with a good book or movie. It really is good to be home because "Life is GREAT in Mesa, Arizona."

The Party's Over . . .

The Sister's Crop has officially ended . . . everyone has returned safely home and before we know it things will be "back to normal", BUT, our lives have been changed and strengthened and blessed by the time we have spent together. Even though we played hard and had very little sleep, the moments of laughter, silence, creating, and pondering were way worth it! This chapter of the "Scrap Sisters" is closed for another 12 months, but the legacy lives on and each of us has left a better person. Our self worth has been uplifted, our emotional reservoirs have been filled, and we have a renewed bond and closeness with each other. Thanks Sue, Cindy, Shelie, Jen, Michelle, Brianne, and Alan for a wonderful time . . . I love you guys!

Sister's Crop Projects

Over the past "5" days we have completed "207" projects which include layouts, mini albums, cards, and class projects. Here are a few examples of the incredible work generated by the Scrap Sisters: Sandy the Queen Bee and Revelator; Sue the Bling Baby and Ecclectic Collector; Cindy the Interior Designer and Volumnizer; Shelie the Paper Princess and Architect; Jen the Alpha Addict and Journalist; Michelle the Rescuer and Inspirator; and Brianne the Scraplifter and Motivator.

Total hours of sleep for the marathon party was not much with all nighters Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. Average amount of sleep per day was 4.5 hours for a total of 22.5 hours for the weekend. Was this crazy? YES! Was it worth it? A BIG YES! When you love to scrap, what do you do? YOU SCRAP!

Additional projects will be posted over the next few days. We had a great time creating and hope you enjoy looking at them. Maybe you will get some ideas for your own scrapbooks . . . we are happy to share!

'40' Hours of No Sleep and Counting . . .

The "All Nighter" at the store was a lot of FUN. Dinner was catered from Cafe Rumba in Mesa and was wonderful as usual. A lot of scrapping was going on. The party started at 6:00 p.m. and ended around 4:30 a.m. when we left to go home. There was a NO SLEEPING rule and the marathon continues. Pages are being created, movies are being watched, and giggles and sillyness have gotten out of control. There have been a few catnaps in-between, but not for long. Dinner tonight at the "Cheesecake Factory" was to die for. (Thanks Amy and Chris!) Some shopping at the mall, and riding in a pink butterfly grocery cart were some of the highlights of the day! Sue, Shelie, Cindy, and Jen are in a close race for completing the greatest number of projects. Don't know if I can catch up, but Brianne, Michelle, and I have created some darn cute layouts and projects.

Stay tuned for more to come . . . soft pillows and a warm bed are a BIG temptation right now; however, "Princess Bride" is the movie of the moment and it's getting close to some of the more exciting scenes. I hope you enjoy the pictures!

The Party has Started!

It's official . . . the scrapbook marathon weekend has begun. Picked the girls up from the airport last night. Sue, Alan, and Brianne arrived earlier from California. As you can see, Bri was the "1st" to come through the door! The house was made ready, tables were set up for some serious scrapping, gifts and projects were placed at each spot, and a Sonic run was the first thing on the agenda.

We played hard . . . went to sleep about 2:30 a.m. Had lunch at the Gecko Grill. Took a class from Michelle at the store (Devine Memories) . . . stocked up on scrapbook supplies . . . and came back home to eat, scrap, sleep, and scrap some more!

The Tally Sheet has been hung on the wall and the competition has started. Watch for updates as the weekend of fun continues . . .

Sister's Crop . . . It's Almost Here!

Our sixth annual "SISTER'S CROP" is almost here . . six days and counting! For the past six years, my sisters, my daughters, my daughter-in-laws, and adopted daughters have gotten together the first week in October for a MARATHON scrapbooking weekend. It started with my little sister Shelie and has grown to the most coveted weekend of the year! My brother-in-law, Alan, is allowed to come because he golfs all day, cooks gourmet meals, and provides the best shoulder massages at night. This is a scrapper's weekend to die for and the pictures from last year help to tell this wonderful story!

Everyone arrives next Wednesday the 27th and the weekend doesn't end until the last plane leaves on Monday night! We scrap, laugh, eat, sleep a little, scrap, laugh, eat, sleep a little more and the cycle goes on and on and on and on. Some of us are night owls and we scrap the night away. Others take a break and try to get some sleep, but the later the night goes on the louder the laughter gets and before you know it, everyone is up and scrapping again!

Can you think of a better way to spend your time than with FAMILY? It's going to be a great weekend . . . watch for updated pictures as the party begins. As you can guess, "LIFE WILL BE GREAT IN MESA ARIZONA" all next week!

Happy Birthday, Mom and Michelle!

It seems just like yesterday that Michelle was born . . . I can remember bringing her home from the hospital . . . all 5 lbs 8 oz of her! She was the cutest little thing and she was born a day before my mom's birthday. My mom passed away when I was "5" months pregnant with Michelle and it was very special for me to have her born so close to my mom's birthday. Michelle's middle name is "Rose" after my mother Rosemary. Celebrating Michelle's birthday today also allows me to celebrate my mother!

I miss her sometimes and then again, I miss her lots of times. It's been "30" years since her death, and so often it seems just like yesterday. Only Jen and Tom knew Grandma Rosie. She was my best friend and a few years ago I found out that all of my brothers and sisters felt like she was their best friend too! She made each of us feel so loved and very special. I have tried to be such a friend to each of my children.

So . . . here's to memories and mothers and daughters everywhere . . . HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Back from Jersey . . .

Just got back from a quick weekend in New Jersey . . . had to administer some Psychiatry certification exams. It was a great trip with lots of great food and fantastic weather. I think the high was 74 and it got down into the low 60's at night. Went to a couple of really yummy restaurants . . . Budacan and Aldo Lamberti's . . . and probably put on a couple of pounds. The desserts were to die for. One was a "Chocolate Pagoda" which was made out of chocolate ice cream sandwiches with chocolate chips, topped with a frozen mousee, and covered with a chocolate ribbon cookie and cholocate sauce! The other was a "Banana Tower" with a rolled cookie that stood about 4 inches tall and was filled with a banana filling and drizzled with caramel. And the other was a very smooth and lite "Key Lime" pie. The salmon was incredible and the entrees at Budacan were very different but oh so good!

Enough about my trip. The Phoenix CONVENTION is right around the corner. I have posted pictures of my "Triple Treat" class. You can still sign up for all of the classes sponsored by Devine Memories by just going to the convention on Thursday and Friday night. Hope we get to see some of you there!

I officially have jet lag and am getting ready to sit back, veg a little, and then get some sleep because it is going to be a killer week! Hope to see some of you this weekend . . . there are still some spaces open for the Devine Memories Friday and Saturday night convention crops. Call the store to sign up for a fun weekend. You will definitely want to see, smell, and touch all of the new product that has come it.

Late Night . . . Early Morning!

The all night pajama party at Devine Memories last night was soooo much FUN! We laughed a lot, played silly games, gave away lots of prizes, managed to get some scrapping done, and ate and snacked and NEVER SLEPT! During this time my home alarm went off "2" times and I had to drive back and forth to make sure things were ok at the house. It turns out the cats set off the motion sensor in the family room. They are both grounded! Everyone who came to scrap held out to the end and had a great time. It was amazing how quickly the hours went by and how much energy we had. Thanks to all the great gals who came and scrapped with us, and special thanks to Kim and Amy for the make 'n takes, the movie trivia game, and the unusual but witty entertainment! Poor Michelle was sick with "bunny" allergies but she managed to keep up with the rest of us. Watch the calendar for a 12-hour holiday workshop in October and a late, late nighter in November to get those last minute projects done.

So . . . I get home and crawl into bed about 7:30 a.m. thinking that I don't have to wake up until early afternoon. Well, the phone rings at 11:15 with someone asking me to donate to a worthy cause . . . went back to sleep and about 12:00 noon I get a call from the store that the credit/debit machine is not working! We think about all the alternatives, try them, and no luck. Knowing that I can't take care of the problem without actually being at the store, I get out of bed, make attempts to look somewhat charming, and head to the store. Needless to say, the machine was locked up and couldn't be fixed. Fortunately, I had a brand new machine at home, which I thought to bring with me, and about 50 minutes later we were back in business. Oh, the life of a business entreprenuer!

Now that I'm home, I really don't have too much energy, the body aches, and a tub full of bath bubbles is calling to me. We have a storm brewing outside, so I think an early night in bed with a good book or a good movie sounds just about right. Have a wonderful holiday weekend and don't forget that life is great . . . even with all of the detours along the way!

Smelling the flowers . . .

Just thinking about when the kids were little and it was just the "5" of us. Mike stopped by the store tonight and it was good to see him. He's so busy . . . way busier than I am . . . and it's always good to catch up on what's going on with his life. I always enjoy when the kids call or stop by unexpectedly just to say hi! It doesn't seem that long ago that they were all living at home.

I miss the pitter patter of little feet. I miss having them come in and jump on the bed and wanting to sit and visit . . . or like Kim was saying tonight . . . the "giggle wrestles" we used to have. I miss not reading bedtime stories and singing good night songs and falling asleep on the bedroom floor in the middle of a make-up story. I miss Saturday morning's and waffle breakfasts. I miss not cooking dinner and having one of them hanging around the kitchen to help. I miss dirty baseball and football uniforms. I miss shopping sprees and finding those "I can't live without" bargains. I miss messy rooms and loads of laundry and packing lunches. I miss hugs and kisses and surprise birthday decorations in the bedroom. I miss chocolate chip cookies, brownies, and peanut butter rice cripsy treats. I miss coming home from work and finding the house miraculously cleaned. I miss the dandelion flower bouquets and the homemade cards. The list could go on and on, BUT most of all I miss hearing the traditional "See you in the morning, I love you, good night!"

Everyone will tell you they grow up too fast, but you really don't believe it until it happens to you . . . so take time to sit on the floor and build a tower out of blocks, or take a walk around the park, or attend a dance recital, or sit in the bleachers and watch the game, or stay up late until they come home from a date so they can tell you how much fun they had, or share their tears because things didn't turn out the way they had hoped.

One of my most favorite jobs is being a mom. And even though they grow up and move away, you are still the mom. It's "ok" to get a late night phone call wanting to know how to take care of a sick child, or just calling because they haven't talked to you for awhile. All of the mothering moments are priceless! I have such a wonderful relationship with each of my children . . . I can honestly say they are my best friends and that's one reason why "Life is Great in Mesa Arizona"!

Bits and Pieces

My son, Tom, called me last night about midnight to let me know his father-in-law had passed away. He was only 69, just a few months shy of his 70th birthday. My heart goes out to Tom and Rhonda and all of their family.

Today is my sister's birthday . . . HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SUE! I hope you had a wonderful day. She is just 13 months younger than I am.

I found a note, left by my grandaughter Kira, when they went back to Utah a couple of weeks ago. It said, I love you, Grandma! That definitely put a smile on my face and a hug in my heart.

I have finished the sample for the Daisy D's Mini Purse album. Pictures are posted on the Devine Memories website, or you can come into the store and see the real thing. The class is Thursday, September 30th.

The "All Night Pajama Party" on September 1st is completely booked . . . it is going to be a fun night. Michelle and I are excited to be working that crop. For those of you who didn't get a chance to sign up, you can still shop until 11:00 p.m. so stop by and see us!

If you haven't signed up for the CK Phoenix Convention being held September 14-16, remember to check out the classes being sponsored and taught by myself, Michelle, and Kim. Our classes still have some room and will be offered both on Thursday and Friday nights starting at 6:30 p.m. It's not too late to make a change or add on another class or two!

Don't forget to sign up for the Rusty Pickle class on Saturday, September 16th from 3-5 p.m. Lance, the "Pickle Man" himself will be teaching and I know a good time will be had by all. The class sample can be found on the DM website.

The screensaver on this computer has a scene of snow falling on a tranquil village . . . I am ready for some cooler weather! I can't wait to open the windows at night or sit in the house with the front door open. I miss not being outside and enjoying the sights and sound of nature.

Last, but not least, Shelie and I booked out airfare to Hawaii today! Before I know it, February will be here and I'll be headed for the beaches and cruise ship.

All in all, it's been a good day in Mesa, Arizona.

Isn't This Great?

So . . . today is the first Friday I have had off in months and I started to tackle my house which has been very much neglected for the past 10 months! To apppreciate the pictures, I need to go back in time and let you know where I am coming from.

Ten months ago I had BIG ideas to remodel my house. I even had someone come in and draw up plans, etc. I was going to extend my family room out into the back yard an additional 12 feet. The kitchen was going to be completely redone . . . flooring, cabinets, ceiling, sink . . . everything. The popcorn was going to come off the ceiling in the living room and white wooden shutters were going to adorn the big picture window. Carpet was going to magically turn into wood flooring and the front door and french doors in the family room were going to be replaced.

WHAT HAPPENED? We decided to open a SCRAPBOOK STORE!

You can guess what happened next, the dream house was put on hold, in fact my entire life was put on hold as we remodeled the store, turned over inventory, hired employees, and made our REAL DREAM come true! What an adventure this has been, but there is no doubt it my mind that it was the right decision.

Back to the opening comment . . . "Isn't This Great?" I was finally able to dust the shelves, clean off the kitchen counters, and make some order out of chaos. The scrapbook studio is jam packed with storage boxes, remmants of scrapbook supplies from my home business, and rows and rows of empty peg board. The sink in the kitchen is still "green". The flooring is still very old yellow linoleum. The kitchen cupboards still bear samples of the paint swatches. The couches are still the same. And the dust rag is evidence that there are other priorities in my life besides DUST.

But, this IS GREAT! I can live with a green sink, and with yellow floors, and with kitchen cupboards, and with dust bunnies as long as I wake up each day and have another chance to live life to the fullest. BUT, the scrapbook studio will become a reality and the couches have got to go. I am going shopping tomorrow and and won't come back until I find something new. Life is too short to worry about some of the insignificant things. What is important to me are the freedoms we enjoy, family, friends, my faith, and the joy that Devine Memories brings each day.

Now that I am good for another six months with the DUSTING THING, "Life is Definitely Great in Mesa Arizona!

Tribute to "'One L"

A VERY VERY SAD DAY for Devine Memories will happen this weekend! Michele, affectionately "One L", will be moving to Pittsburg with her dear husband and family as he starts his Dental School adventure. We know it is ONLY for the next "4" years. . . BUT, that doesn't make it any easier. We have deliberately put off saying goodbye. Here is how we really feel . . .

We don't want to SAY that you are going away;
We don't want to HEAR that you are going away; and
We don't want to SEE that you are going away!

The Utah grandkids went home today which means that summer vacation is officially over . . . BUMMER! We've had a lot of fun these past several days . . . laughed alot . . . played alot . . . swam alot . . . slept (some of us more than others) . . . and even cried alot when it was time to say goodbye! Family is a wonderful thing and brings so much joy and passion to my life. I hope you enjoy these pictures and can feel the love and excitement and FUN that we have experienced together. Even though a special part of me lives so FAR away, I can truly say that "Life is Great in Mesa Arizona".

Just taking a few minutes to unwind from the late night crop . . . order some product . . . and enjoy the quiet. We had a great time yesterday afternoon at the Rain Forest Cafe. The grandkids love that place and it has become somewhat of a tradition when the Utah cousins come to town. We took some fun pictures, one of which will be posted when I get it downloaded from Jen's camera. It is in honor of our dear friend "One L" and our sorrow with her moving to Pittsburg for the next four years.

When I came home tonight from working the late night Crop, I found little boys bouncing all over the place. It was after midnight but they said they weren't sleepy . . . so, I took a few minutes to catch up on their day, did some cleaning up in the kitchen, and to my surprise they had crashed out on the couches and floor and were dead to the world! There is nothing sweeter than to see them sleeping and looking so innocent. I love them SOOOO much!

I best be off to bed . . . have a busy day tomorrow . . . classes at the store with Gina Lovato, trip to Best Buy for a new computer (my son-in-law is helping me go wireless at home), work on class projects, spend time with the kids, and scrap at the store tomorrow night with Jen and Shell. Before we know it, Jen and family will be going home and we will wonder where the time went. We are planning a water slide party at my house on Monday . . should be fun! I don't like it when they leave and wish they lived just a few short minutes away.

There is a lot of activity at my house . . . Jen and Tom and family (the Erekson's) arrived late Monday night from Utah for summer vacation in Arizona. The cousins from Utah and the cousins in Arizona couldn't wait to see each other. In fact, they have all been hanging out at my house and having a great time! There is constant computering, swimming, eating, playing, and laughing . . . what a wonderful sound. We had fun this afternoon taking pictures. Jenna was the best photographer of all and she is only "4"! You can see that life is in constant motion at my house right now. We'll be off to the Rain Forest Cafe tomorrow for lunch and whatever excitement the day brings. I think you will agree that "Life is Again Great in Mesa Arizona"!

Moment of Silence

A young, 22 year old woman, was shot and killed last night . . . many of us at Devine Memories knew her and her family. Our feelings of hope and faith and prayer are with them today. As I contemplate how fragile life is and how tradegy can affect any one of us at anytime, I am so thankful for my family, friends, and faith to help me through. Each one of us is a precious child of God and we need to remember that he does love us and does watch over us and will comfort each of us in our individual times of need. I don't understand the violence of the world but I do know that we are not alone. The tapestry of our lives continues to be woven a strand at a time and it is because of family and friends like you that my tapestry is becoming a work of art!

Please keep the Blasnek family in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with the death of their beautiful daughter. Some of you may know that they lost another daughter in a tragic car accident about ten years ago. They are an incredible family but need many extra blessing at this particular time in their lives. . . and I know that we can help with our prayers.

Keep your families safe, don't go outside late at night by yourself, don't let your children go out by themselves, lock your doors, and report any suspicious activity that you notice around your homes and neighborhoods. There is strength in numbers and life is too precious!

Thank you Heidi and Colton for a fun and very entertaining evening. I hope you made it home safely. What an incredible rain storm. I don't remember seeing one like this for a very long time. We hung out at the store until 10:30 p.m. and then decided to brave the storm and venture home. It was a little scary, ok a lot, but we all made it and are now warm and dry and getting ready to crawl into bed.

As I mentioned earlier, we had a wonderful time with Heidi and crew! The customers loved it and couldn't say enough about the new techniques they learned, what fun it was spending time with Heidi and learning more about her life. A highlight was her son Colton . . . what a great kid!

It will be an early trip to the store in the morning. Need to pick up a wet/dry vac and attack the carpet. The rain was literally pouring into the store through the frame of the back door as the wind was blowing in just the right direction. We mopped it up as best we could, put a towel on the floor to help stop the rain from coming in under the door, and hope and pray that we don't find a bigger mess in the morning.

Sleep tight . . . the rain is muchly needed and smells so good . . . life is definitely great in Mesa, Arizona.

Autism Weekend

It has been an incredible weekend for all of us at Devine Memories. . . the autism fundraising event exceeded our expectations in more ways than one. We met so many incredible people and listened to so many amazing stories about autistic children and the blessings of life that they bring into our families. We are all precious children of our Father in Heaven.

The fundraising event went over the top. Michelle had a dream and vision to increase awareness in the scrapbooking community about the various spectrums of autism. With the help of friends in the medical community, other parents of autistic children, and my son-in-law Tom Erekson who put together our family video, we were able to answer questions and share what we have learned in raising three wonderful autistic boys. We also learned much from each of you.

The generous support of the scrapbooking community was awesome . . . vendors and scrappers alike went above and beyond to donate product, time, and money to this event. We are grateful for all of you! With your support we were able to raise $2700 for the Autism Speaks Organization. These funds will be used to help sponsor the Devine Memories Scrapbook team for the Autism Walk to be held March 31, 2007. More details about this great event will be shared in September, but mark that date on your calendars as we want to put together an incredible group of walkers.

Again, it cannot be adequately expressed in words how grateful Michelle, Jen, and I are for your kindness and friendship and support. It is people like you who make this world a wonderful place!

Sunday . . day of rest . .. day of peace . . day of contemplation

Sunday is my favorite day. There are times that I wish I had "7" Sundays a week, but then I realize it wouldn't be my favorite day anymore. The biggest thing on my mind right now is getting through this next week and being able to accomplish everything I need (or want) to do. Some things I have no choice (cleaning out files at work, packing up the office, saying my good byes) and others are because I don't want to leave anything undone. The question about HOW? is my greatest challenge.

I am a woman of faith and I know that I can accomplish miracles if I put my trust in God's hands. I will admit that I really, really, really want to see the store be successful. At this point in time, my life depends on it! I also want to see the "Autism Awareness Campaign" kick off a new tradition for Devine Memories so that we can give back to the community and to others who need love and support. Michelle has such a strong vision for this and I want to see her dreams come true.

I find great comfort in the hymns and as I was looking through the hymn book today, I found these words to be calming and encouraging . . . I have highlighted what seemed to jump out just for me.

"Be still, my soul: The Lord in on thy side;
with patience bear they cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change he faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: Thy best, thy heavenly friend
thru thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Six days and counting . . .

Only six days and I will officially retire from the hospital . . . twenty great years . . . but now I'm excited to be moving to the next chapter in my life and enjoying the next twenty years in making "Devine Memories" the best little scrapbook store in Arizona! This is a dream come true. Am I scared? Yes . . . but it is a good scared. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time and I can't wait to move forward. Special thanks to my dear daughters, Jen and Michelle, and their love and support and incredible talent in making this dream of ours come true. I couldn't do it without them. They are my best friends and my inspiration. I am truly blessed.
